What is autism?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurologically based developmental disability that affects a child’s social skills, communication, and behavior. The term “spectrum” indicates a wide range of symptoms and severity. Early recognition and supportive therapies can help manage symptoms and support development.
In California, autism can be diagnosed by specialists like psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, or developmental pediatricians. A primary care physician can also initiate the process with a referral or initial evaluation. For those eligible, the California Regional Centers offer autism diagnostic services through the state’s developmental disability services system.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is a scientific discipline and evidence-based therapy for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. ABA focuses on understanding and changing behavior by analyzing and modifying the environment to improve social, communication, and learning skills, while also reducing challenging behaviors. The Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP) develops these guidelines to help ensure effective and high-quality delivery of ABA services.

ABA therapy is personalized for every child. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct an assessment to understand your child’s unique needs. Based on this assessment and medical necessity criteria, the BCBA will create an individualized treatment plan.

Therapy is delivered one-on-one by trained professionals and is designed to help your child in area such as communication, social skills and daily living skills while reducing challenging behaviors. ABA also teaches new skills while using positive reinforcement to achieve the desired goals. The number of therapy hours varies depending on your child’s age and treatment goals, typically ranging from 15 to 35 hours per week.

ABA is covered by most commercial insurance, Medicaid and Regional Center funding. Pleas reach out to your specific funder to ask about coverage for ABA or call our admissions specialist to understand more about your specific funding requirements.
