Reaching out for autism services is a big step. Many parents tell us they feel anxious, uncertain, or even intimidated at the beginning.
That’s completely normal.
Here’s what families can expect when getting started:
Step 1: The First Conversation
It usually begins with a phone call or online inquiry. This is a chance to:
- Ask questions
- Share concerns
- Learn whether services are a good fit
There is no pressure and no obligation, just a conversation.
Step 2: Intake and Insurance Review
Next, an intake coordinator will help gather information and review insurance or funding options. Families are guided through the process so they don’t have to navigate it alone.
Step 3: Assessment and Planning
If services move forward, clinicians may complete assessments to better understand strengths, needs, and goals. Families are active partners in this process.
Step 4: A Personalized Plan
No two plans look the same. Therapy is tailored to:
- The individual’s needs
- Family priorities
- Developmental stage
Goals are meaningful, realistic, and flexible.
Step 5: Beginning Therapy
Early sessions focus on building trust and connection. Progress is gradual, and communication with families is ongoing.
You’re Not Expected to Have All the Answers
Many parents worry they need to “get it right” from the start. You don’t. Questions, emotions, and uncertainty are part of the journey — and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
A Gentle Reminder
Starting therapy isn’t about fixing your child. It’s about supporting growth, understanding, and connection one step at a time.
